Self care over the festive period

I notice, like many of us, that at this time of year there are a few extra parties and social occasions, the wine is flowing a bit more freely and there are a few more to-dos to do. It’s a busy old time of year and it’s easy to see healthy self-caring habits go out the window.

So this year I am doing things a little differently and planning in my self caring strategies over the next couple of weeks. I’m almost ramping them up a little because I know I’ll be drinking a bit more red wine and socialising more.

As an introvert I am ensuring I have at least an hour a day to myself over the festive period, be that meditating or running or reading. Doing this will ensure I am present and energised when spending time with those I love. I am also going to prioritise eating extra fruit and veg, because I know all those vitamins will help my body process the more indulgent food and drink I take on board.

I am also going to give myself permission slips, which I think can be a really helpful tool when moving from one social situation to another. Permission slips are a simple and effective strategy advocated by Dr Brené Brown. You simply write yourself a slip and keep it in your pocket or purse and it gives you permission to be or do something. I give myself permission to not have to be lively and full of chat all the time, I give myself permission to be gentle with myself.

So what will you do for yourself over the next two weeks? How will you be kind to yourself in the midst of the festive chaos? It could be helpful to think of physical, emotional, intellectual and spiritual ways to care for yourself. And just remember the more you care for you the more love and care you will have to share with others.

With love, Hannah
