Having Gratitude for the Future

Happy Thursday. It’s cold and crispy here and we’re into the shortest 30 days of the year. I resist this time of year every year, but then realise it’s actually an opportunity to go all in on my candle game and get wrapped up and cosy for a few weeks. It’s actually starting to feel quite nice, and I hope you’re finding ways to embrace this time of year too.

I’ve been leaning into gratitude lately. Having run a number of workshops and webinars recently where we talk about the importance of gratitude, I have been doing more myself. And something I realised the other day was the power of being grateful for the future.

It’s a sort of visioning exercise, if you picture things and situations you’d like to see come to fruition in future and then name that you’re grateful for them, it’s like you’re subconsciously propelling yourself towards that outcome.

I know it might sound a bit strange, but it seems to do something on a physiological level when we are grateful for things yet to come. Of course, those visions and things might not turn out as you envisage, but I know that they are much more likely to happen if you step into a space of gratitude for them.

When we find ways to feel grateful we are giving ourselves the message that life is hopeful, it’s fun, it’s safe, the world is a supportive place. And from that place of hope, fun, safety and support, we are more likely to go for those things we want in life.

So I’d like to invite you to spend a few minutes now naming the things you’re grateful for in the future. Notice how it feels, and notice what transpires as a result of ‘gratituding forwards’.
