Self-care and breath

It’s no secret we live busy, chaotic lives. Most of us experience stress on a regular basis, and it can feel hard to find peace and stillness.

In workshops and 1:1 work I talk regularly about taming self-sabotage, being compassionate to ourselves, and being with our emotions in order to work through the challenges of daily life. It can be hard to consistently implement these strategies however, especially without support.

But one self-care space that is easier and perhaps more simple to access is our breath.

When I used to work in the not-for-profit sector I’d find myself holding my breath whilst trying to complete a piece of work. Realising this and allowing myself to take a nice deep breath felt so calming and helpful.

Our breath is immensely powerful. When we take the time to do several deep breaths it can feel like coming back home to a place of safety. It is simple and easy and can be done anywhere.

Breathing is always with us, it’s always available to us. It’s free, and it’s like medicine.

I recommend paying attention to your breath today, practice inhaling deeply and slowly, see your breath as a way to heal.

And if you have a little more time, I highly recommend the meditation app Insight Timer, where you can find a stunning meditation teacher on there called Sarah Blondin who helps you to relax, find new perspectives on life, and take some lovely, calming deep breaths.

Self-care can take many forms, and when we feel we don’t have time to explore our emotions, be with self-sabotage, eat healthily, do exercise, or practice self-compassion, we can always simply get still for a moment and take some nice big, healing deep breaths.

With love, Hannah
