I saw this quote today:
‘Do what you feel in your heart to be right – for you’ll be criticised anyway.’ Eleanor Roosevelt.
It’s so easy to doubt decisions we’re about to take, for fear that we might make a mistake or be criticised for doing something wrong, or to feel regret at a past decision because people questioned the choice we made, or the plan didn’t quite pan out.
Many of us have the little voice in the back of the head that says ‘I should have done it this way’ or ‘I should choose the right course of action’ as if there’s a path we can take where everything goes completely to plan and no one criticises or doubts us in any way.
But, although in some ways disappointing, it’s empowering to see Eleanor Roosevelt’s quote, and to know that there will always be critics whatever choice we make. Because in effect, we’ll always be ‘wrong’ for someone, somewhere, so we might as well learn how to be with the criticism (or just not listen to it) and follow our gut instead.
This way, when we make our choices we know that they will be right for us. We may have to do a bit of work to keep those critical voices at bay, but after all is said and done, we can rest in the knowledge that we did what was right for us.
If you’ve got a decision looming, get still and quiet and listen to what your gut says.
With love as always, Hannah and Team Bird
