Everyone Sang

At points this week I’ve felt incredibly fed up of lockdown. The feeling ebbs and flows but overall I have experienced an underlying rumble of ‘enough now’ and at times it has felt a little unbearable.

A few years ago I was given a beautiful book called ‘The Poetry Pharmacy’ by William Sieghart and every so often I pull it off the book shelf and read a poem or two to help lift my spirits. I had a look this morning and found a poem that is designed to help with hopelessness. No matter how hard things can feel, we do always move through the emotion, eventually we do feel lifted, we do feel better. (And singing can really help with that too!)

Everyone Sang
by Siegfried Sassoon

Everyone suddenly burst out singing;
And I was filled with such delight
As prisoned birds must find in freedom,
Winging wildly across the white
Orchards and dark-green fields; on – on – and out of sight.

Everyone’s voice was suddenly lifted;
And beauty came like the setting sun;
My heart was shaken with tears; and horror
Drifted away… O, but Everyone
Was a bird; and the song was wordless; the singing will never be done.

If you are feeling fed up, hopeless or perhaps even restless please know that you are not on your own with those feelings.

If you want to explore more about how you can support yourself, and those around you we’d love to see you at the ‘Building Resilience in an Uncertain World’ webinar on 27th May 2-3.30pm. If you are struggling financially right now but would still like to attend do drop me an email and we can have a chat.

With love as always, Hannah and Team Bird
